The University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center Resource pages -- Onco-Link -- presents an incredible amount of information for medical professionals as well as for patients and their families. Attractive quick access buttons on the first screen offer shortcuts to what's new, cancer news, meetings, journals, and a search engine that performs exact-match title searches and full-text Boolean queries. The next screenful offers a choice of eight menus to find target information most efficiently. These menus are oriented by disease, medical specialty, clinical trials, global resources, FAQs, financial issues for patients, psychosocial support and personal experiences, and cancer causes, screening, and prevention.
The FAQ page has question-answer links, links to other FAQs, and a searchable database of cancer organizations. Patients and their professional care providers might appreciate the online answers to questions like "How can I get free cancer drugs?" (some drug companies have an indigent patient program that only requires a simple form) and "How do I get drugs under study in an emergency?" (doctors can apply to the FDA for an Emergency Investigational New Drug or IND).
Not to be one-sided, OncoLink is calling for these submissions from Web citizens: investigative research, review articles, oncology-related freeware and shareware, manuscripts on alternative medicine, and essays, drawings and other works by cancer survivors concerning the cancer experience. Very well done.
