Sue at the Field Museum http://www.fmnh.org/sue/
What do you do if you find the biggest, most intact Tyrannosaurus Rex in existence? Why, you dust it off and ship it to the Field Museum in Chicago, where they'll name it Sue and build a massive exhibit to display it to the public. The exhibit's not open yet, but check out the site for a sneak peak at Sue's journey from carnivorous killing machine to crated cretaceous curiosity.

Voycabulary http://www.voycabulary.com/
Another in the long line of really cool online dictionary/thesaurus reference tool thingamajigs. Enter the URL of an online document and you'll receive that same document with every word hyperlinked. Click on any part of the text for an instant dictionary definition, or for suggestions from a thesaurus. That simple, that much ... fun.

Simon Larbalestier http://www.simon-larbalestier.co.uk/
The British photographer, best known for his work on Pixies album sleeves, specializes in surreal imagery of a dark and downright scary nature. His subjects come right out of David Lynch's high school locker: stuffed monkeys, rusty pipes, animal teeth, rotting leather boots, barbed wire. They're not exactly uplifting photographs, but they're certainly unique.

Mark Twain at Large: His Travels Here and Abroad http://library.berkeley.edu/BANC/Exhibits/MTP/
It's an awesome online exhibition of the collection of Mark Twain Papers of the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. Check out his Mississippi River notebook, written when Twain was still a cub pilot. Read about his later years in San Francisco, "Heaven on the half shell." Or, follow along as the esteemed author heads to Europe and the Holy Land, as a correspondent for the San Francisco Alta California.

Stupid Laws http://members.xoom.com/stupidlaws/
Be careful when you walk your pachyderm along San Francisco's Market Street--elephants are prohibited from strolling down the thoroughfare unless they're on a leash. Female chocoholics in Idaho rejoice--it's illegal for a man to give his sweetheart a box of candy weighing less than fifty pounds. And if you happen to be a denizen of Denver, Colorado, you might want to think twice before lending the vacuum cleaner to your next-door neighbor. They're all "stupid laws" and they're all on the books!

The Rum Diary http://www.booksmith.com/RumRing.html
Hunter S. Thompson, the godfather of gonzo journalism and celebrated author of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," has a new book out. "The Rum Diary," is a semi-autobiographical novel which chronicles his exploits as a journalist in Puerto Rico in the Fifties. The Booksmith in San Francisco celebrates the novel's arrival with an eclectic collection of photographs, journal entries, and audio clips.

The Clint Howard Project http://macworld.zdnet.com/andyi/clinthoward.html
Thanks to the mind-boggling all-inclusiveness of the Internet, Clint Howard--character actor extraordinaire and brother to Ron "Opie Taylor" Howard--has a web site all to himself. So the next time you see a geeky guy that has one scene in the new Jim Carrey flick, don't think "nameless," think "Clint Howard."

Concordances of the Great Books http://www.concordance.com/
Tolstoy's "War and Peace" uses the term "war" 295 times and "peace" a mere 110 times. The word "cackle" shows up just once. Do you know where? Can you guess how many times the word "elementary" is used in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Complete Sherlock Holmes" series? No more than eight. And in Sophocles' "Oedipus Trilogy" the word "mother" occurs 34 times. Amazing what you can learn online, eh?
